What Level of College Softball Can My Daughter Play?
Updated October 2026
Every softball parent asks it: is my daughter a D1 player, a D2 player, D3, NAIA or junior college? College coaches answer that question with numbers first. Pitch speed, exit velocity, home to first, arm strength, pop time and grades each have a typical range at every level. Comparing her numbers with those ranges shows where she fits today and what it takes to move up.
The numbers coaches check first
- Hitters: exit velocity and bat speed.
- Speed: home to first, from a slap or a full swing.
- Position tools: arm strength, and pop time for catchers.
- Pitchers: pitch speed, a changeup well off the fastball, and strikes.
- Grades: eligibility and admissions.
Make your money count
Showcases, tournaments and camps only pay off when you’re aiming at the right level. The Softball Future full report shows where she stands, for less than one showcase.

Why level comes before everything else
Knowing her level tells you which showcases to attend, which camps to pick and which coaches to email. See our guides to pitching speed, exit velocity and home to first times.
Common questions
- How do I know if my daughter can play D1 softball?
- Compare her measured numbers with typical D1 recruit ranges at her position, adjusted for age. Only about 2.1% of high school softball players reach Division I, so most players fit D2, D3, NAIA or junior college.
- Is junior college a good path for softball?
- Yes. Junior college players can play right away, develop, and move on to four-year programs, often at lower cost than four years at one school.
